It’s that time once again where people look back at the past year as well as make listings of things; finest concerts, finest movies, finest albums, and, of course, finest comics. As usual, I’m going to join in the fun with My preferred Comics of 2013. I decided to do a “My Favorite” listing instead of a “Best of” listing since I haven’t even checked out close to all the comics that came out last year so I have no concept if these comics are the best, however I do understand that I liked them. So right here are my top 10 split into top 5 Comics as well as top 5 graphic Novels. Hold tight as well as keep your hands inside the cars and truck at all times.

My preferred Comics of 2013

Rachel Rising

5  Rachel Rising (Abstract Studios) – Terry Moore has produced a interesting as well as an incredibly disturbing comic as well as I’m enjoying watching him peel back the layers of the story like an onion. Moore has always provided visitors with complex characters as well as Rachel Rising is no exception. I like that the story is about the characters as opposed to telling a story as well as plugging in characters to make it work. That may noise strange, however to me, having the story be about the characters means that I ended up being invested in the characters as well as care about what occurs to them. That makes for a much more satisfying reading experience. as well as Moore’s art, as usual, is fantastic.

Popeye Classics

4  Popeye classics (IDW) – This series reprints Bud Sagendorf’s traditional Popeye comic books from Dell from the late 40s to early 60s as well as it is just ordinary fun. If you grumble about exactly how comics are no longer for all ages as well as you desire there was something great for any type of reader, you truly requirement to inspect this out. Popeye, Olive, Swee’Pea, Wimpy, as well as all the rest of the team are classic, ageless characters as well as this series shows why.

Suicide Risk

3  suicide danger (BOOM! Studios) – Mike Carey as well as Elena Casagrande have produced an intriguing series that is part superhero comic as well as part mystery. I reviewed the very first five problems of the series starring police officer turned superhero Leo Winters here, as well as it has only gotten better. The introduction of the team headache situation has truly ramped up the tension as well as something strange is going on with Leo’s daughter.

Hellboy in Hell

2  Hellboy in hell (Dark Horse) – Mike Mignola both composes as well as draws Hellboy for the very first time in years. For Hellboy fans, you don’t requirement more than that to pick up this series. For others, I’ll state that this is some truly weird stuff with major revelations about who as well as what Hellboy is. toss in Mignola’s incredibly stylized as well as moody art as well as you’ve got one hell of a book.

47 Ronin

1  47 Ronin (Dark Horse) – The traditional Japanese tale, not the Keanu Reeves movie. Adapted by writer Mike Richardson as well as artist Stan Sakai with input from Lone Wolf & Cub’s Kazuo Koike, this is a rousing samurai tale of loyalty, deception, revenge, as well as honor. If you’ve ever wondered exactly how Sakai would handle a series starring humans instead of the anthropomorphic animals of Usagi Yojimbo, question no more. The result is stunning. I had so much fun reading this series. I truly can’t provide a book higher praise than that.

Hypernaturals

Honorable mention: Hypernaturals (BOOM! -A satisfying final thought to Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning’s story. I’m expecting more), Batman ’66 (DC Comics – A fun series influenced by the traditional 60s TV show), as well as Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel Comics – I just like this mix of characters).

My preferred graphic Novels of 2013

Fairy tale Comics

5  Fairy tale Comics (First Second) – The one non-collection on my list. It features adaptations of fairy tales, both widely known as well as unfamiliar, by creators including Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, Bobby London, Karl Kerschl, David Mazzucchelli, as well as more. It’s a extremely fun book for all ages. If you want to understand more about it, I reviewed it here.

Best of Milligan & McCarthy

4  finest of Milligan & McCarthy (Dark Horse) – I’ve been a long-time fan of the work Peter Milligan as well as Brendan McCarthy have done together, so much to ensure that I was thrilled to get the chance to interview them about it for Back problem magazine. Now, Dark equine has released a lovely large collection of their astonishing partnerships including Paradax!, Freakwave, Rogan Gosh, as well as Skin. There are some excellent surprises in the book including summertime of like as well as The Electrick Hoax, two of their partnerships I’ve never checked out before, plus a peek at their work on DC/Vertigo’s Shade, The altering Man. Myone frustration was that they did not reprint Sooner or later in full (I believe The Electrick Hoax isn’t total either, though I might be wrong). aside from that, I believe this is a marvelous collection as well as shows two excellent talents having fun with comics.

Walt Disney’s Mickey mouse color Sundays

3  Walt Disney’s Mickey mouse color Sundays Vol. 1 & 2 (Fantagraphics) – These two volumes gather all the Mickey mouse Sunday pages drawn by the excellent Floyd Gottfredson. On top of that, the second volume includes all the non-Mickey Sunday pages he worked on making these two volumes a total collection of all of his Sunday pages! just like the everyday strip volumes, both books include great deals of commentary as well as background info that expands reader’s understanding of Gottfredson as well as his work. His Sunday pages are rather a bit different than his everyday strips. They are commonly gag strips as well as when there are continuing stories, since there is a week between each installment, they are usually relatively fundamental plots as well as don’t go on for as well long. These are excellent fun as well as a welcome addition to Fantagraphics’ wonderful collections of Gottfredson’s Mickey mouse comic strips.

Genius, Illustrated: The Life & Art of Alex Toth

2  Genius, Illustrated: The Life & Art of Alex Toth (IDW/The library of American Comics) – The second of three volumes by Bruce Canwell as well as Dean Mullaney looking at the life as well as career of legendary artist, Alex Toth. just like the very first volume, Genius, Isolated, Canwell’s biographical essay, which covers from 1960 to Toth’s death, is interesting as well as well researched. Of specific rate of interest to me as an animation fan is the discussion of Toth’s years at Hanna-Barbera where he produced area Ghost as well as worked on a number of other series. Canwell provides a balanced look at Toth, both great as well as bad. Of course, being a book about Toth, the genuine star is the art which is stunningly as well as lovingly reproduced. This is a lovely book as well as a fitting tribute to an amazing talent.

Barnaby Vol. 1

1  Barnaby Vol. 1 (Fantagraphics) – Crockett Johnson has always been understood to me as the guy who composed as well as drew the traditional children’s book Harold as well as the Purple Crayon. I truly didn’t understand much about him beyond that. Now, “Creator of Barnaby” has happily been added to the list. This is without concern the most fun I had reading a book this past year. The art may look “simple,” however I’ve understood sufficient artists to understand that drawing things just is difficult as hell, as well as Johnson is a master at it. The adventures of Barnaby; his Fairy Godfather, Mr. O’Malley; his parents; as well as the assorted ghosts, ogres, leprechauns, as well as speaking dogs they satisfy are just charming. I cannot suggest this book extremely enough.

So, what did I miss? What’s on your list? comment below as well as let me know!

Now, go checked out a comic!
